Nigerians Groans Over hike in price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Findings from gas stations in Anambra showed that the price of LPG had skyrocketed t
o a record all-time high of N500 per kilogramme, forcing some Nigerians to turn to alternatives such as kerosene, charcoal and firewood.
Since 2020 December, the petroleum product has increased by more than 50%, against the backdrop of devaluation of the naira and lingering inadequate domestic supply of the fuel.
A gas plant in Onitsha refilled a 12.5kg cylinder for LPG for N5,250 today, up from N4,380 sold in June and N3,200 in December 2020.
Our correspondents who visited some of the LPG stations in Onitsha, Awka and Nsugbe, Anambra State gathered that as cooking gas prices maintained an upward trend in recent months, many residents of Anambra state have been discouraged from using the fuel for cooking.
Speaking with our reporters, Olayinka Owolabi, a depot manager, Mr Kolawole attributed the hike to the country’s high dependence on importation for LPG, adding that the hike is badly affecting their sales.
Mr. Kolawole, however, called on the Federal Government to resuscitate the dying refineries in the country to full function capacity so as to halt importation cost.
Some of the gasoline consumers also lamented on the price increase, considering the country economy situation and rise in dollar exchange.
