Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series: Gov Obiano Extols Sterling Qualities Of Former Commonwealth Scribe


Governor Willie Obiano has assured to continue exploring innovative and effective ways of touching lives and changing the landscape of the state with good governance, adding that his administration have rolled out policies, programmes and projects that have become monuments to his vision and mission in government.

Obiano disclosed this at the tenth Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series, held at Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Center, Awka had Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano in attendance as the chief host.

The event had ‘Leadership and Good Governance In Nigeria’ as its theme.

Speaking at the tenth Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series the various speakers  were of the view that playing politics to promote good governance, political education, visibility of non-partisan actors, formalisation of leadership training and re-ordering of Nigerian constitution would help solve some of Nigeria’s problems.

Declaring the event open, Governor Obiano said his administration has made efforts to carry the lamp of excellence for which Chief Emeka Anyaoka represents in the international stage with dignity and honour.

In a Keynote address,  a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank Professor Kingsley Moghalu who spoke on the topic, defined true leadership as the ability to influence, inspire and mobilize people for action and manage  risks, stressed that effective governance requires transparency, accountability, rule of law, inclusion and participation, which according to him help  to check corruption.

Earlier, former Governor of Cross River state and Chairman on the occasion, Mr. Donald Duke stated that Nigeria’s problem is that of inadequacy which has led people into using what they have to get what they want, adding  that people who have passion for leadership should be  motivated in the process.

Responding,  the former Secretary General of Commonwealth Chief Anyaoku expressed depression about developments in the country in terms of high level of insecurity, declining sense of unity, unemployment, poverty and impoverishment, proffering restructuring of the country as the only way forward.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku is the third Commonwealth Secretary General, elected by Heads of Government at their meeting in Kuala Lumpur in 1989. He served for two terms of five years.

The Annual lecture series was instituted as a way to honour the icon, in celebration of his achievements and all he stands for.
