Residents of Onitsha and other communities in Anambra State engage in indiscriminate dumping of refuse and open defecation due to the failure of the state government to evacuate the filth in public places and therefore live in perpetual fear of an epidemic outbreak.

During a visit to some of the dumpsites by our correspondent, Olayinka Owolabi and Doreen Obianukor, residents of Enugu road, Central Police Station, Court road, Fegge road, Marine area, Nsugbe road, all in Onitsha, revealed there were waste bins stationed at the areas but the bins were often times filled and spilling over the roads before being evacuated by men of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency.

Some of the residents who pleaded anonymity, recalls that even people come with cars to dump refuse in the area particularly when it is evening, he berated the government for not providing the necessary facilities that would serve the community despite paying for the service.

Contributing, other business owners and Tricycle drivers in the area expressed disappointment at the ineptitude of the state waste management agency over the littering garbage in the area, adding that the odour from the heap contributed gravely to their health and can be deadly than Covid-19 as residents can easily contact disease such as Diarrhea, Typhoid, Cholera.

However, one of the operators of the dumpster at CPS road explained that the cause of the delay is not negligence of duty on their part, attributed the cause on constant raining and the recent sit at home order by IPOB.

Meanwhile, when our correspondent called the Managing Director, Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Mr Amaechi Akorah, he said he is not responsible for waste management in in Onitsha, although he is the ASWAMA MD.

While noting that the issue was discussed extensively at the State Executive Council yesterday, Akorah directed our correspondent to the State Commissioner for Information for details.

However, when contacted, the State Information Commissioner, C-Don Adinuba revealed that a committee was set up including himself and others to work with the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA to work out how to address the waste challenge in Awka and not Onitsha.

He however said the Governor has expressed serious disappointment with the contractors handling the waste.
